Old Ore Road

Used in the early 1900s to transport ore from Mexican mines to the railroad station at Marathon, the Old Ore Road generally follows the route used by mule and pack trains a century ago. The road has excellent views of the Chisos Mountains across the Tornillo Creek drainage to the west.

It is 28 miles in length and it took us 2.5 hours to ride including stops for pictures and some minor mishaps, like bike down.

We started it at 5:30pm and finished just before sunset at 8pm.

The biggest difference with other roads in the park is the number of steps that this road has. There are many sections where we had to believe that bike could do things our minds kept telling us no way. In the end the bikes are much better than we give them credit for and we kept our cool, used lots of clutch and throttle in the right amount and came out victorious.

Bucket list item: Ride Old Ore Road on a GSA - tick !
